BROWN, KALITTA PACE NHRA TOP FUEL QUALIFYING IN SEATTLE

SEATTLE, WA – Antron Brown moved past Doug Kalitta with a 3.735-second pass on the final run in Top Fuel to capture number one qualifier honors for Sunday’s Northwest Nationals at the Pacific Raceways in suburban Seattle as the two Toyota drivers placed first and second.

The pole is the second of the year for Brown, who previously qualified first at Englishtown.  The defending Seattle champion placed in the top three in three of the four Top Fuel qualifying sessions to earn six valuable bonus points.

“Everybody shares everything out here but, right now, this is our turn,” said Brown. “We always love coming out here to Seattle. These fans are incredible. The heat yesterday to what we got today, to run those types of runs on tracks with those temps, my hats off to our two crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald, Brad (Mason) and all the Matco Tools/U.S. Army/Toyota boys, they were versatile this weekend, like an Army soldier, we adapt to every situation. This sets us up to go places tomorrow. We got some good qualifying points. Now we’ve got to think about racing. Tomorrow’s going to be a tough day, but we’re looking forward to that challenge.”

Kalitta had struggled early in the weekend, but jumped to number one in his final run before Brown moved past. The second in qualifying marks the sixth time that Kalitta has qualified in the top three in the last seven Top Fuel events. With the strong effort in qualifying, he has now clinched his berth in the Countdown to the Championship playoffs with three races remaining in the regular season.

Shawn Langdon earned bonus points in two of the three sessions this weekend on the way to qualifying eighth, while Troy Coughlin Jr. will start eliminations from the number 11 slot.

In Funny Car, Alexis DeJoria led the way for the Camry contingent by qualifying eighth.  She earned bonus points in two of the weekend’s four sessions.  Teammate J.R. Todd will start ninth tomorrow and open with John Force. Del Worsham placed 12th, one spot ahead of Cruz Pedregon in 13th.

Sunday’s NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series eliminations will be televised live on FOX beginning at 3:00 p.m. (all times EDT).
