Kent, WA –  At the  conclusion of qualifying for the NHRA Northwest Nationals in Kent, Wasington, the Maddern Racing Top Alcohol Dragster remained in the pole position.  Their stellar performance of a 5.246 seconds at over 272 miles per hour is recorded as the second fastest pass ever in a blown alcohol dragster.

It is the 12th time that the Peen Rite/Clean Boost partnered team has earned the #1 qualifying position.  They were deemed as the team to beat in eliminations.

“It was an abrupt ending in the semi finals” noted Demke, “the car was so consistent and lady luck was seemingly in our favor.

“The car launched and knew I caught the tree just ahead of Megan, and then the engine just quit.  After further evaluation, we discovered a broken engine power connector and our weekend was over”.

Mike Coughlin’s ’71 Vega nearing completion

Courtesy of Jegs

DELAWARE, OH – Growing up around a racetrack, you can’t help but fall in love with the cars that made a big impression on you. Mike Coughlin is just weeks away from reuniting with one of his first automotive loves.

Coughlin hired Woody’s Hot Rodz of Bright, Ind., to rebuild and enhance a 1971 Chevy Vega GT, and the build is almost complete.

“With the LSX-454 engine we’ve put in it right out of the JEGS catalog, it would probably make a pretty quick race car,” Coughlin said. “But the closest this car will get to the starting line of a drag strip is the parking lot. Don’t get me wrong, I plan on driving this car.”

The Vega was a light-bodied car assembled in Ohio that screamed for big horsepower from the time it rolled off the factory floor. Coughlin said he’s seen photos as the build has progressed, and can’t wait to see the final product.

Janis Pulling Double Duty at Speedtech U.S. Drags IV

Elma, NY – Over the past ten years or so Mike Janis has become a household name when it comes to fast door slammers; he has won in both legal and outlaw trim but, this weekend he’ll try to do both at the same event.

The ADRL has added legal Pro Mods to their U.S. Drags schedule in Dinwiddie, VA as an exhibition class. With the recent success of the addition of the Top Sportsman category legal Pro Mod racers hope the ADRL will give them another place to play.

“It’ll be tough, running both cars at one event but with the help of the AJPE guys on the Duster I think we can make it work,” said Janis. “We’ve run two cars out of our camp before but always with another driver and another crew. This will be the first time we do this with one driver and crew for two cars. Luckily we have a little help when it comes to the Pro Extreme Duster from AJPE. I’m really excited to see what our Eaton Aeroquip Mustang does on an ADRL track. Having another venue to run the legal car is a huge plus for not only us racers; but the fans and our sponsors will also benifit,” said Janis.

Grand Junction, CO – Colorado business man, Mike Knowles, has been a regular on the NHRA legal Pro Mod scene for nearly a decade, but this weekend Knowles plans on rubbing elbows with a bunch of outlaws in a land for lovers of door slammer racing.

Known for its “outlaw” style of door slammer racing, the ADRL has added legal Pro Modifieds to its repertoire. The first exhibition event will of legal Pro Mods will be held this weekend at the ADRL Speedtech U.S. Drags IV in Dinwiddie, Va.

“This is a neat deal. Tim (McAmis) is running a first class operation with the ADRL and adding legal Pro Mods is a win, win for both the fans and us legal racers. Having another venue to run our cars is great for us and being able to do it in front of a crowd like the ADRL draws is awesome. They love their door slammers in the south,” said Knowles.
