Allen Johnson Drives to Quarterfinal Finish, Bumps into Top 10 for First Time of Season

NORWALK, OH – Allen Johnson drove the Marathon Petroleum/J&J Racing Dodge Dart to the quarterfinal round of competition after taking out Chris McGaha in the first round of eliminations at the 11th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Johnson came into raceday in the No. 9 spot and had a first round matchup against Chris McGaha. When Johnson reacted at the launch with a strong .022-second reaction time, his win light was already turned on in his lane because McGaha turned on the red light by .012-seconds. Despite the red light, Johnson still crossed the finish line at Summit Motorsports Park first with a 6.627-second pass at 209.43 mph over McGaha’s 6.670, 208.91.

In the second round, Johnson had rare circumstances as he was trying to stage the car. When Johnson was fully staged and began engaging the two-step, the car rocked in and out of the beams and Johnson rolled through the beams trying to fully stage again. Greg Anderson’s 6.597, 210.90 advanced to the semifinal round and Johnson unfortunately had no recorded time.

“I eased in and when I went wide open on the two-step, the light flickered,” Johnson explained. “In that moment, you either gotta try to get it back in the beams or let off. That was just a bad break right there. I still stand behind my car and my Marathon Petroleum team; we’ve got a good car right now and we’re starting to go some rounds.”

Unofficially, Johnson’s quarterfinal appearance was enough to move him in the No. 10 spot in the Pro Stock point standings.

“That’s the first time we’ve been in the top ten all year,” Johnson smiled. “Everything is headed in a positive direction. Top ten? How about that!”
