TOTTENHAM, ON – Next stop for Ike Maier, driver of the Paton Racing Top Fuel Dragster, will be the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts August 5-7 at the Grand Bend Motorplex.

“As with our time at the recent Canadian Nitro Nationals at Cayuga (at Toronto Motorsports Park), it will be great to get out and run in front of our local fans,” noted Maier, who lives north of Toronto. “The crowds will be able to experience the speed and power of a Top Fuel car without a lot of long-distance travelling.”

Maier, who has driven a Pro Modified for several seasons, acquired his NHRA Top Fuel license earlier this year, and has competed in several NHRA National events. His match racing at Cayuga was a successful outing, as he powered his car to a 4.22-second posting, the best of the six nitro cars in attendance.

“Based on conditions at Cayuga, we did the best of the fuel cars,” he said. “We’re hoping to step it up when we’re at Grand Bend.”

Maier is competing in what is considered the ultimate class in the sport of drag racing. Running on nitromethane and producing up to 8000 horsepower, a Top Fueler is capable of speeds in excess of 300 mph in less than four seconds down the drag strip.

Maier and the rest of the Paton Team will be working with a video production crew at the upcoming Grand Bend race in conjunction with a taping segment for the Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet show.

His next NHRA competition will be at the prestigious US Nationals at Indianapolis August 31 – September 5 for the 57th Annual Mac Tools US Nationals presented by Lucas Oil.

The team is headed up by Barry Paton of Paton Racing which has employed Todd Paton behind the wheel of the Top Fueler, as well as Alberta’s Tim Boychuck in both the NHRA and the IHRA.

Crew chief on the team is James “Jimbo” Ermalovich. Sponsorship for the Top Fuel effort is provided by John Hoey of Tim Hortons, Lenron Inc, a New Brunswick transportation company, and Crosbie Industrial from Newfoundland.

In the past few years Maier has raced competitively in the Pro Modified class with his 1963 Corvette in the PMRA, the IHRA, and the NHRA, and will compete in selected NHRA national events in both classes for 2011.
