8th annual DSR Open House adds U.S. Army band, singer to Friday’s long list of features to raise money for Riley Kids

BROWNSBURG, IN- Musical performers often devote hours determining their performance wardrobe, but Corrin Campbell doesn’t DSRhave to waste time laying out what to wear before a concert.

She knows her ensemble never changes: Her daily work attire works just fine.

Sgt. Corrin Campbell will lead the Army Recruiting Entertainment Group band as lead vocalist, bassist and pianist when the group performs Friday during the eighth annual Don Schumacher Racing Open House at Brownsburg, Ind., that will benefit Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University and Camp Riley.

The free, festive Open House, which is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., attracted a record-crowd of more than 4,000 fans last year and boosted DSR’s contributions to Riley past the $200,000 mark. Attendees can celebrate DSR’s 200th NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series title and owner Don Schumacher’s May 2 induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega, Ala.

Sgt. Campbell and the band is the latest feature to be added to the U.S. Nationals’ biggest and longest running Open House.

The native of Duluth, Minn., is an active-duty soldier in the U.S. Army and is currently stationed with United States Army Recruiting Command in Kentucky. She is the only original music artist to be supported by a branch of the military. She now lives in Nashville, Tenn.

Upon graduating from high school in 2000, she joined the U.S. Army and served as a bass guitar player and vocalist in the Army Band Field.

From 2004 to 2005, she deployed with the 1st Cavalry Division to Baghdad in Operation Iraqi Freedom II. As a lead singer of the Army’s rock group, band leader of the jazz combo and bass player of the Latin band, nearly every day contained a musical mission. Most days consisted of travel by Blackhawk to entertain soldiers across Iraq.

She opened for Robin Williams, Ted Nugent and Toby Keith when their USO tours traveled through Baghdad.

She left the Army in 2006, and after serving three years with the Maryland National Guard Band returned to active duty in November 2009 and served with the Army Material Command Band at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland. It was while stationed there, she was selected to play at Lilith Fair in Columbia, Md.

She now is more focused on recruiting by telling her Army story through music.

“Soldiers are all real people who achieve real goals – while they are serving. I wouldn’t be the person I am today … I wouldn’t be the musician I am today if it weren’t for the Army,” she says.

The Open House kicks off the professional portion of the 59th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals over Labor Day Weekend, which opens with professional qualifying at 7 p.m. Friday at Lucas Oil Raceway that is located about 3 miles from DSR headquarters.

Popular Open House features returning are: the Indy Hi-Winders Car and Bike Show; more than $20,000 in items available in the DSR/Riley Silent Auction; DSR Driver Autograph Session; Raminator Monster Truck; 330-mph Art Show featuring artists Bruce Tatman and Thomas Patsis; DSR CNC/Machine Shop tours and Engine Blower Dyno demonstration; and more surprises!
